Corporate Wellness and Gyms

Designing a Corporate Gym?

Corporate wellness can improve the working environment by building a sense of belonging, and engendering teamwork. Physical activity can go hand in hand with other non-working activities shared by colleagues such as educational activities (learning and development) focusing on lifestyle and improved health. It is the reason why corporate wellness offers the best return on investment for a company in today’s market place.

Corporate wellness and fitness is so much more than just a room full of gym equipment

Obesity increases costs in the workplace. The annual per capita increase in medical expenditures and absenteeism associated with obesity ranges from $450 to $2,500 per obese employee. The estimated cost of obesity at a firm with 1,000 employees is about $285,000 per year. Source: IDEA Fitness Journal, Jan. 2006.

Leading Companies Need a Healthy Workforce

Corporate Wellness

Leading companies owe their success to quality products or services, brand reputation, and a healthy workforce.

Maintaining efficiency at work is a critical factor to business success. The key to this process is improving productivity and a reducing in absenteeism.

In the United States, employees’ poor health accounts for over 260 billion dollars in lost productivity per year, or 2.4 percent of the GDP. In addition to causing an increase in absenteeism, poor health is also to blame for employees’ increasingly deteriorating performance in the workplace, as well as lowered stamina, lowered concentration, and an increase in workplace errors and accidents.

Why it makes good business sense to offer fitness facilities to your staff

Corporate Gyms

Corporate Gyms

I am often asked by companies why they should invest in a fitness facility or in gym equipment.

So, instead of my normal ranting about how good it really is and how much I think it is beneficial, I thought that I would allow the experts speak for themselves.

I have referred to only a few of the most outstanding research reports here.

The fact is that the experts all agree that people who are fit and healthy are happier, more productive people. This happiness and focus translates into measurable bottom line results for a company.

From an emotional and therapeutic perspective we know that when people are happy they make good long term decisions with confidences. When people are sad, depressed, sick and demotivated they tend to make rash and irrational decisions.

Exercises improves well being, focus, sleep patterns and encourages a whole cascade of other good lifestyle choices

There is one major difference between offering fitness facilities at the company premises and relying on the big chains to do your work for you. The chains do not have a vested interest in making your employee fitter and healthier, but you do. As a manager or company owners you have the ability to encourage staff to use your facility and manage the process.

In my years of managing and owing heath clubs I sold many corporate gym memberships and the usage factor was no higher than the number of staff members who would have used a gym in the first place.

Don’t waste money in gym memberships, invest in your staff and good quality gym equipment.
